Physics Academy of the North East (PANE)
The Physics Academy of the North East (PANE) stands as the largest and one of the oldest science academies in Northeast India. PANE is the brainchild of a group of distinguished physicists from the region, that was conceived during a gathering at IIT Guwahati on November 11, 1997, commemorating the centenary of the electron’s discovery. Among the notable figures present were Prof. K. M. Pathak, the founding Vice-Chancellor of Tezpur University, and Prof. Y. V. G. S. Murti, the founding head of IIT Guwahati’s Physics Department.
PANE was officially inaugurated on April 6, 1998, by renowned physicist and educationist Prof. G. C. Deka in an event chaired by Dr. D. N. Buragohain, the then director of IIT Guwahati. The academy’s headquarters were established at IIT Guwahati, signifying its role in fostering scientific research and education in the region. The academy is registered under societies registration act since June 19, 2002.
